After briefly retiring to become a full-time Twitch streamer, Logic recently returned to music as he succumbed to the temptations to make music once more.
Over the last decade, Logic, AKA Robert Bryson Hall, has released six records, much to critical and commercial acclaim. The rapper got his career up and running in 2010 with his debut mixtape Young, Broke & Infamous. His journey started to gain traction once he began his Young Sinatra mixtape series that found him a fanbase.
Following the third success of the final instalment of the trilogy of Sinatra mixtapes, Logic landed a record deal with Def Jam Recordings in 2013. The following year he released his debut studio album, Under Pressure. The Maryland rapper got his first number one with his third album, Everybody, in 2017, which featured collaborations with the likes of Run The Jewels’ Killer Mike, Chuck D, Angel Elsort and English folk-singer Lucy Rose.
When Logic spoke with Complex a couple of years ago about his 25 favourite records, his career was still following an upward trajectory, and he was yet to become the superstar that he is today. His list paints a vivid portrait of how Robert Bryson Hall became one of the most successful rappers on the planet and the records that shaped his early life.
Nas pops up twice on Logic’s list, with both Illmatic and It Was Written included. “The funny thing is I wish I could have discovered Nas back when Illmatic first came out,” Logic commented. “When I first discovered Nas, it was through I Am…. I saw ‘New York State of Mind Pt. II’ and I was like, ‘What the hell is ‘New York State of Mind?’ I didn’t know. While searching for ‘New York State of Mind’ I found Illmatic. I loved it.”
He added: “It Was Written is just my shit. I love that album. I love ‘I Gave You Power.’ It’s one of the dopest conceptual records I have heard in hip-hop. Rapping from a perspective of a gun, that allowed me to rap from the perspective of my brother and my sister. You know what I’m saying? Those two Nas albums definitely inspired a lot, Illmatic for sure, but I love It Was Written.”
While Logic has been a vocal critic of Kanye West’s political opinions in recent years, his music holds a special place in his heart, with Late Registration, Graduation and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy all selected.
“Late Registration is arguably my favourite Kanye album,” the rapper boldly stated. “At one time it was Graduation, but for whatever reason there’s something about Late Registration, especially recently. It’s something about the honesty in his voice. Him getting on the record and singing, and it’s a little out of tune, but we love Kanye because he not only depicts his vision and his way of thinking, but the emotion in his voice makes you feel like you’re on the record.”
