Listen to a nine-minute new song from Frank Ocean

One of the most elusive names in hip hop, Frank Ocean operates wholly on his own timescale. It is a notion that has seen him manage to remain one of the freshest acts around while only releasing small tidbits of music across recent years. Now, the singer and songwriter has made up for that apparent lack of output by delivering a near-nine minute new song.

Over the holiday weekend, as part of his Apple radio show Blonded Radio, the unique star shared a conversation he had with Wim “The Iceman” Hof, a Dutch athlete and motivational speaker.

“Me and @iceman_hof had a conversation some time ago when I was in the earlier stages of grief and I remember marbling afterwards at how his energy blasted through the phone,” Ocean wrote on his Instagram account.

“So much vim in this Wim. We spoke for a while about his work, the purpose of grief and how going into the cold water changed his life.

“It reminded me of conversations in the studio with players I know. Freewheeling, psychedelic, emotionally charged, intelligent and generous. I enjoyed listening to him, so in this edit I just let him speak interrupted. Me, @coryhenry and @dylanpatricewiggins played some sounds underneath to heighten the feeling.”

Recorded in a single take in 2020, the new song was shared as a Christmas present to Ocean’s loyal fans as he left with the message: “Felt like it fit the wabi-sabi of Wim’s words. Merry Xmas everyone.”
