Lil Uzi Vert sues Malibu rehab facility over video recording
Lil Uzi Vert is suing a rehab facility for allegedly recording them.
The Philly rapper entered Oro House Recovery Centers in Malibu in February 2022 to work on their sobriety. However, they claim their privacy was violated.
According to People, Uzi claims employee Lynn Tumpa and her nephew recorded them without their consent a released the footage.
Uzi alleges the act violated federal and state law and the company’s policies, procedures, and obligations.
During their time at the facility, Uzi took part in group and individual therapy every week. The lawsuit claims Tumpa “secretly and illegally recorded a segment of her session with [Uzi],” before sharing it with her nephew. The video surfaced on X in February 2024 and on Instagram in April 2024.
The suit continues, “Tumpa was the source and disseminated the video online, either directly or indirectly.” Uzi is seeking compensatory, punitive, and statutory damages. However, the amount, if any, will be determined at trial.
Tumpa is accused of breach of fiduciary duty, while Tumpa, her nephew, and Oro Recovery are accused of intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and invasion of privacy by public disclosure of private facts.
In addition, Oro Recovery are accused of breach of contract and negligent hiring, supervision, and/or retention.
During an interview with 032c magazine in 2023, Uzi opened up about their time in rehab. “I spent seven months in rehab,” he said. “The first month and a half were hard, but after that, it wasn’t easy because the people there became my family. They showed me so many different outlets and ways to cope with life.”
He added, “We did a lot of group talks, a lot of writing on whiteboards. I was so sure that it wasn’t going to work, but surprisingly it’s pretty effective.”
