Lil Nas X opens up about sexuality in new documentary trailer

Atlanta emcee Lil Nas X (real name Montero Hill) has finally released a trailer for his upcoming HBO documentary Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, which sees him get candid about his sexuality.

Following his explosion into the mainstream with the viral 2018 hit ‘Old Town Road,’ inquisitive fans highlighted his backstory as an openly gay Nicki Minaj fan. This led to the lyricist proudly revealing his sexuality, which, ever since, has polarised hip-hop lovers.

Released on January 18th, the trailer sees Hill sit down for an in-depth discussion about how he came out as a gay man to his family and his struggles navigating a culture that has been consistently hostile towards homosexuality.

Speaking about his reception in the industry, Hill detailed, “Some people think my music is dope. Some people see me as, like, this Satanic devil.” He then proceeds to talk about his childhood, admitting, “When I was a kid, my sexuality was like the elephant in the room.”

Hill expressed he’s still trying to shift the views of his relatives and parents, stating, “I’m always trying to challenge the way my family thinks of things. So many queer people are making these strides, but it’s a fight.”

Aside from his sexuality, the documentary also chronicles his first world tour, Long Live Montero. In a press release about Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, HBO explained, “The film is divided into three acts — Rebirth, Transformation, and Becoming — and chronicles Montero’s own odyssey as he navigates the pressures of his meteoric rise to stardom, his desire to inspire his fans and accept the naysayers, and his place within the pantheon of Black, queer icons.”

The HBO exclusive is set to hit the streaming platform on January 27th. Until then, Hill’s fans will eagerly await the documentary. You can watch the full trailer for the documentary below.
