Lil Durk converts 13 prison inmates to Islam amid murder-for-hire charges

Lil Durk is currently detained at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center after being charged with murder-for-hire in October. During his time in prison, the Chicago rapper has allegedly been helping convert inmates to Islam.

His father, Dontay Banks, revealed the information during a new interview, in which he believes Durk will return with a fresh perspective.

“As a human, you sitting in there looking at four walls, it’s gonna have this effect on you,” he said on The Breakfast Club. “But you know, you always bounce back, you always look at the greater picture. What Allah is doing for us right now, building us to be a better man, is greater than what they trying to do to us and trying to tear us down.”

He continued, “[Durk] was telling me that when he came in, there was like four Muslims on the block. He said now it’s 17 Muslims on the block, so he in there converting.”

Last week, Lil Durk’s lawyer filed a motion to dismiss his 2022 charges, claiming the feds gave “false evidence” to a grand jury. Durk pleaded not guilty after he was charged with the attempted murder of Quando Rondo, which resulted in the death of Lul Pab. His trial is set to begin on October 14th, 2025.

Durk previously addressed his Muslim faith last year. “Don’t label me nothing outside of A MAN A FATHER and A 1000% Muslim – THE VOICE,” he wrote on Instagram.

In some additional posts, he said, “I don’t gangbang I’m a Muslim. Basically what I was saying on my post in so many words you can’t do both ima be the one who say it. So if you follow me as a brother, a friend, an icon, follow me to my new chapter of life.”

He added, “When I make music I rap what I seen and been through not telling you to go do it HUGE difference the music won’t change but my life goals will.”

Lil Durk released his new album Deep Thoughts from behind bars on March 28th, debuting at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. Future, Lil Baby, and Jhené Aiko were featured on the project, which was produced by Metro Boomin, Lil Yachty, Southside, Benny Blanco, and others.

In a message from jail, Durk wrote, “I wasn’t gon’ put this out but then I remembered the streets need this. Not being outside with y’all when I drop is hard, but I know I will feel y’all love and energy through these walls. Thank y’all for rocking with me through everything. I tell these stories so our voice is never lost. I’m coming home soon, stronger than ever. Inshallah, The Voice. Love, Durk.”
