Lil Durk denied bail after review for showing “a disrespect for the rules”

On May 8th, Lil Durk appeared in a federal court for a hearing concerning his request for bail. The Chicago emcee has been accused of murder for hire following the 2022 death of Quando Rondo.

The ‘Laugh Now Cry Later’ rhymer has been behind bars since he was arrested and charged last year on October 25th alongside five of his OTF affiliates. Despite moving from the Federal Detention Centre in Miami to LA’s Metropolitan Detention Centre, he has not been granted bail after numerous requests.

The rapper’s legal team previously suggested a bail package involving house arrest. Durk’s attorneys proposed that Beverly Hills-based ARSEC Security could watch the emcee 24 hours a day with armed guards until the trial on October 14th. One of the reasons Durk was denied bail on this occasion was his bad behaviour.

According to the judge, the Signed To The Streets creator has shown “a disrespect for the rules” by using 13 other inmates’ phone accounts to make more calls than he is permitted to.

Still, there is a bit of hope for Lil Durk, as the prosecution suggested that they would not be using his lyrics in court. During the hearing on May 8th, the rapper’s lawyer, Drew Findling, indicated that the superseding indictment was wrong in its assessment of Lil Durk’s music, telling the judge that he has never “monetised and celebrated the death at the heart of this case.”

However, Assistant US Attorney Ian Yanniello of the prosecution told the judge that their case isn’t even focused on his music, stating, “This murder case is not about the defendant’s lyrics and it’s not about his music. It’s about his conduct.”

Even though Lil Durk has no previous criminal record, the judge decided to reject his request for bail due to his flagrant disrespect of the rules by partaking in three-way calls and using other inmates to achieve his goals. For now, Lil Durk remains behind bars facing charges for conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, committing murder-for-hire resulting in death, as well as the use of, carry and discharge of firearms and a machine gun.
