Lego versions of Hip-hop icons shown in trailer for new Pharrell Williams movie
Super-producer and N.E.R.D. founder Pharrell Williams recently teamed up with production house Focus Features to release an autobiographical movie using Lego to tell his life story. Now, the film’s official trailer has been released.
Named Piece By Piece, the film features various artists the musician has worked with over the course of his star-studded career, including Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, Timbaland, and more.
Piece By Piece will hit the big screen in October of this year, and the trailer is highly enticing. Fans see a Lego version of Pharrell in conversation with the film’s director, Morgan Neville, attempting to convince him to create the movie.
It opens with Williams stating, “You know what would be cool is if we told my story with Lego pieces!” To which a Lego Neville responds, “Seriously?” The producer replies: “Just be open.”
The opening scene of the trailer is an exact replication of a conversation that happened nearly five years ago. In a recent interview about the film, Pharrell recalled, “That’s how the conversation went down in my head. I didn’t know what it was going to be, but it was going to be interesting, and I was completely in.”
Williams expressed that he wanted to go outside the box with this autobiographical film and didn’t want it to be like any other movie, which is on-brand as the musician is not one that could be easily pigeonholed. Giving fans a hint at how different the project is, Pharrell asserted, “What we made is not like any other movie. I don’t know what a comp for it would be!”
Concerning labels and categorisation of the movie, Williams continued, “People can try and label it. It’s just its own film. It’s mind-blowing, in a way, the freedom that we were able to put together in the film, but that only works if you’re channelling your subject.”
From Hidden Figures to Despicable Me and others, this is not the first film Williams has been involved in. However, this is the first that will share his own life experiences from a first-person perspective.
