Lawyer labels Tory Lanez as "totally despondent" in jail

Canadian rapper and singer Tory Lanez (real name Daystar Peterson) remains behind bars following the guilty verdict he received in December of last year. The musician was found guilty of negligent discharge of a firearm, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and carrying a loaded and unregistered weapon and is currently awaiting his sentence.

The ‘LUV’ singer faces a maximum sentence of 19 years in federal prison. However, Peterson has been doing everything in his power to prevent that, and his attorneys are actively trying to fight for 11 to 13 years.

Lanez and his legal team have put in multiple appeals following last year’s guilty verdict. However, he has been unsuccessful in swaying the judge. As such, Lanez is attempting to bolster his legal team by adding another lawyer. However, the judge presiding over the case has disallowed this.

According to reports, Peterson wanted Ronda Renee Dixon to join his legal team. Dixon is one of the most prestigious defence attorneys in the US. The rapper planned for her to assist Jose Baez, one of his current attorneys. Unfortunately, Baez felt he did not need assistance.

A legal reporter named Meghann Cuniff recently spoke to Dixon, who disclosed that Lanez looked “totally despondent” behind bars and that his eyes were completely black. As such, she attempted to get the Toronto native bail.

The motion Dixon filed read, “Because Mr Peterson has viable, meritorious post-conviction litigation, this court should award bail. The unconstitutional nature of his confinement provides ample justification.”

It continued, “Peterson’s conviction is not punishable by death. Because he will apply for probation, file an appeal, and pursue additional post-conviction remedies, this court should admit him bail within the court’s discretion.” As of now, it is still unclear when Peterson’s sentencing will occur.
