Latto’s a new female rap sensation who, alongside Ice Spice, has taken the industry by storm. First arising in 2019 with her hit single ‘Bitch from da Souf’, Latto signed with RCA Records and released a remix with Saweetie and Trina, which became a platinum-certified track.
Since Latto (real name Alyssa Stephens) has been on an upward trajectory in her career, her debut project, Queen of da Souf, peaked at 44 on the Billboard 200. However, her sophomore album was when the buzz surrounding the ‘Muwop’ lyricist was exacerbated.
Latto ended up on the cover of XXL and was part of their Freshman Class of 2020. In 2022, Stephens released 777. The album saw appearances from the likes of 21 Savage, Lil Wayne, Childish Gambino, Lil Durk and Kodak Black. However, that doesn’t mean 2022 was all good vibes for Latto.
Last year, Nicki Minaj and Latto got into a heated argument on social media following a disagreement concerning their tracks ‘Super Freaky Girl’ and ‘Big Energy’. When Nicki Minaj released her single ‘Super Freaky Girl,’ the Grammy Awards decided to remove it from the hip-hop category as it leaned more towards pop music.
However, Minaj insisted that if her single was to be removed, then Latto’s ‘Big Energy’ should also be removed. Minaj took to Twitter, writing, I have no prob being moved out the RAP category as long as we r ALL being treated fairly. If SFG has 2B moved out, then so does Big Energy!”
This led to an unending tit-for-tat in which Minaj tweeted “This Karen has probably mentioned my name in over 100 interviews,”. However, despite the fact that Latto had an altercation with Minaj, she still has a lot of love and respect for her and, in an interview with Billboard, revealed her favourite Nicki Minaj songs.
Latto’s favourite Nicki Minaj songs:
- ‘Roman’s Revenge’, Pink Friday, (2010)
- ‘Blazin’, Pink Friday, (2010)
- ‘Dear Old Nicki’Pink Friday, (2010)
