Kool G Rap shares emotional tribute to the late DJ Polo

Kool G Rap has shared a lengthy and very moving tribute to his collaborator DJ Polo. Polo unfortunately passed away on July 27th aged 63.

The rapper took the time to remember Polo fondly. The two of them worked together on three studio albums. These include Road to the Riches, which was released in 1989, 1990’s Wanted: Dead or Alive, and one compilation.

Kool G wrote an essay, published by Rolling Stone, on August 8th, looking back on his time with his friend and collaborator Polo. He details their friendship, their work together, and how much of an inspiration Polo was.

“I looked up to him because he was that dude in the hood,” said Kool G, “Even though he wasn’t known to be the craziest DJ ever, he was still Polo. Everybody knew that name. But with Polo came DJ Smalls, Disco Twins, [and] a whole bunch of other names, because he was affiliated with all them.”

Kool G continued, “I looked up to Polo as far as being a name in the hip-hop game at that time, having the ability to get a record out there early. I’m honoured to this day that my career happened to come into fruition through Eric B and then Polo, and then Marley Marl, and then Juice Crew.”

From the heart, Kool mentioned the fact that he likely wouldn’t have enjoyed a career were it not for the talent of DJ Polo. In his emotional tribute, he highlights that, in addition to bringing himself to the world, he also helped other people shine through.

“Polo, he was a true friend of mine. He was a brother of mine. I loved him,” he said, “And one thing monumental that he did, other than bringing himself to the world, [is bringing] Kool G Rap to everybody. It happened because of Polo. [He was] one of the most realest, down-to-earth, humblest and funniest dudes a person could ever know. And I know I speak for a lot of cats that got to know Polo, personally. They would agree.”

The legendary DJ passed away on July 27th. The cause of death is yet to be revealed. One of the first people to mourn the DJ was DJ Chuck Chillout, who took to social media to share a photo of Polo with the simple but sweet caption, “This Hurt real Bad RIP to DJ POLO.”

A lot of others soon came forward with their own tributes, including Ice T and Eric B
