Killer Mike wins three awards at Grammys 2024 before arrest

The Atlanta rapper Killer Mike swept his respective categories at this year’s Grammy Awards, taking home three despite being arrested backstage for an altercation.

Footage emerged of the 48-year-old rapper being taken away from the backstage area in handcuffs. Despite the circumstances surrounding his temporary arrest still being unknown, police have confirmed that he has since been charged with “misdemeanour battery.”

Killer Mike claimed awards for ‘Best Rap Performance,’ ‘Best Rap Song,’ and ‘Best Rap Album,’ which makes him the male with the most wins this year. Despite being noteworthy, his triumph seems to be somewhat overshadowed by the news of his arrest backstage.

Killer Mike said, “At 20 years old, I thought it was cool to be a drug dealer. At 40, I started to live with the regrets and the things I’ve done. At 45, I started to rap about it. At 48, I stand here as a man full of empathy and sympathy for the things I’ve done.”

The excited rapper took the stage when claiming his third award, saying, “Sweep! Atlanta it’s a sweep.” He was then arrested for the altercation some 30 minutes afterwards. No further comments by the rapper or his team have been made at the time of writing.

It is believed that nobody was hurt due to the altercation, and no significant disruptions were caused to the ceremony. The rest of the awards were able to continue without issue.

Elsewhere, Taylor Swift made history by being the first performer to win ‘Album of the Year’ four times, and the supergroup Boygenius racked up three wins for their debut album, The Record.
