The “butt-ass naked” reason Kid Cudi almost missed out on a Lil Wayne verse

For his 2024 album Insano, Kid Cudi recruited the services of Lil Wayne, who jumped onto the song ‘Seven.’ The pair seem to play off each other well, but in reality, there was a disconnect between them on the recording.

On his Big Bro with Kid Cudi podcast recently, Cudi spoke with his old collaborator Dot da Genius, who has produced a lot of his work through the years, when the subject of that track ‘Seven’ came up. The ‘Pursuit of Happiness’ artist explained how things hadn’t run entirely smoothly as it was being put together in the studio.

Cudi had been interested in getting Lil Wayne on board for the song, and he was delighted when Wayne agreed to do it, but there was a problem with their schedules. While Cudi was eager to work at a reasonable time of five in the afternoon, Wayne revealed himself to be more of a night owl.

His team informed Cudi, “Oh, Wayne’s not going to be in the studio until three in the morning”.

That really didn’t work for Cudi, who returned to Wayne’s team with an alternative proposal. A new time that ostensibly suited both parties was arranged, but this too failed to run without a hitch.

“Eight o’clock comes, no answer,” Cudi recalled, “Nine o’clock, no answer. 11 o’clock, no answer”.

By this point, Cudi admitted that he had been “in my pyjamas like, ‘Alright, I’m about to go to sleep’.” Of course, once he was in bed, he got the call. Wayne was at the studio at last.

But Cudi wasn’t prepared to head over to the studio. As much as he wanted to be there when Wayne laid down his verse, he wasn’t in an appropriate state to go at that moment. “I’m butt-ass naked, man,” Cudi admitted, “I’m sleeping in the nude!”

But Wayne didn’t take his absence as too much of an affront, and he laid down his verse anyway. They didn’t get to play off each other as they otherwise might have, had they worked together in person, but their approach sufficed for this song at least.

Cudi remains eager to work with Wayne again, but in person next time. He addressed his peer directly on the podcast, requesting another session: “I want to cook some more, Wayne”.
