Kendrick Lamar has shared a six-minute short film, We Cry Together, after releasing the collaborative track with actress Taylour Paige on Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.
The new film was self-directed by Lamar himself alongside Jake Schreier and Dave Free, meanwhile, Adam Newport-Berra worked as its cinematographer. Lamar and Paige play a couple in We Cry Together who are absorbed in an argument and get personal in their verbal attacks against each other before eventually having make-up sex.
The project was originally filmed in March 2020 and was then screened theatrically in June. In total, it had seven screenings at the Laemmle Royal Theater in West Los Angeles from June 3rd until the 9th.
Apparently, each screening of the film reportedly had a heavy security presence, and attendees weren’t even allowed to bring their phones into the theatre. According to The Hollywood Reporter, most people at the screening were family and friends of the film’s crew. However, around 20 tickets for each show were saved for members of the public.
The reason why it was screened at the Laemmle Royal Theater was to allow it to be eligible for competition at next year’s Academy Awards, as it now qualifies for nominations in the Best Live Action Short category.
Meanwhile, in a new interview with Citizen Magazine, Lamar explained why he removed himself from social media, he said: “If I feel I have to remove myself, I just remove myself.” When asked why, he responded: “Because I’m so invested in who I am outside of being famous, sometimes that’s all I know. I’ve always been a person that really didn’t dive too headfirst into wanting and needing attention. I mean, we all love attention, but for me, I don’t necessarily adore it. I use it when I want to communicate something.”
