Kendrick Lamar announces title and release date for new movie

The title and release date for Kendrick Lamar‘s new movie has been revealed. The live-action comedy, produced alongside South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, was first announced in January 2022 but will finally surface this year.

Whitney Springs is the title of the film, which will “depict the past and present coming to a head when a young black man, who is interning as a slave re-enactor at a living history museum, discovers that his white girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his.”

The movie is set to be released on July 11th via Paramount Plus. A poster for the movie lists Kendrick as an actor alongside Chloe East, known for her roles in The Fabelmans and Heretic, and Celeste Octavia.

Dave Free is a producer alongside Kendrick on behalf of pgLang, their independent multidisciplinary creative communications company. Vernon Chatman wrote the script, and Parker, who directed his last movie, Team America: World Police, in 2004, directed the film.

Paramount Pictures’ president and CEO, Brian Robbins, previously said in a statement, “On behalf of Paramount Pictures and the wider ViacomCBS family, we look forward to ushering in the first theatrical collaboration from these creative visionaries, and galvanising audiences worldwide around a powerful storytelling experience.”

Robbins described Chatman’s script as “one of the funniest and original scripts” he’s ever read. Filming began in October 2024 in Pomona, California.

Whitney Springs will arrive off the back of Kendrick headlining the Super Bowl in February, where he brought out SZA, Samuel L Jackson, Mustard and Serena Williams. He also released his latest album, GNX, in November, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart with 319,000 units.
