Kendrick Lamar wins Emmy for Super Bowl halftime show
Kendrick Lamar won his second Emmy over the weekend. The Compton rapper picked up the ‘Outstanding Music Direction’ award for the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show Starring Kendrick Lamar.
The Primetime Emmy Awards took place at LA Live’s Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 7th. Kendrick won the award alongside his musical director and live bass player, Tony Russell.
Kendrick headlined the Super Bowl LIX halftime show in New Orleans, Louisiana, in February as the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22.
The performance included appearances from SZA, Samuel L Jackson, Mustard, and Serena Williams. Kendrick famously performed his Drake diss tracks ‘Not Like Us’ and ‘Euphoria’ that were released during their feud.
The show brought in a mammoth 133.5 million viewers, featuring music from his GNX album and hit singles like ‘Humble’, ‘DNA’, and ‘All the Stars’.
In a press conference ahead of the show, Kendrick said, “I think I’ve always been very open about storytelling. Through all my catalogue and my history of music, I’ve always had passion about bringing that on whatever stage I’m on. I like to always carry on that sense of make people listen but also see and think a little.”
Elsewhere at the awards ceremony, Kendrick received nominations in the ‘Outstanding Variety Special (Live)’, ‘Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special’, and ‘Outstanding Choreography (Variety/Reality)’ categories.
Kendrick previously won ‘Outstanding Variety Special (Live)’, ‘Outstanding Music Direction’, and ‘Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special’ for his involvement in Dr Dre’s halftime show in 2022.
The show saw him perform ‘Alright’ and ‘m.A.A.d City’ alongside high-profile guests like Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, and Mary J Blige.
