Kaytranada takes aim at Beyoncé after collab request

The Canadian producer and rapper Kaytranada has criticized Beyoncé for making an unfair request regarding one of her songs. In a new interview, he suggested that the former Destiny’s Child singer offered a meagre price for the rights to remix ‘Cuff It’.

‘Cuff It’ was a song released on Beyoncé’s popular 2022 album Rennaissance. The album was praised for its eclectic spread of songs within the singer-songwriter’s associative realm of house, disco and R&B. Subsequently, she ventured into the country with her lauded 2024 album Cowboy Carter.

Speaking in a new interview with Vulture, Kaytranada addressed Beyoncé’s unfair pricing, given the wealth she has amassed over the past few years. “Sometimes people don’t see your worth and how important you are. I know what I mean to people,” he said on the offer he received for his remix.

After establishing his issue, he received a tirade of online criticism from Beyoncé’s fanbase, who defended her right to make whatever offer she liked. In response, Kaytranada clarified his feelings towards the former Destiny’s Child singer.

His response arrived on Twitter/X, which has since been deleted, either by Kaytranada or a member of his team. “Mannnn I didn’t drag her that’s just what happened,” he wrote. “The remix didn’t get a release and it is what it is but later that year I opened [for] her on tour AND on her Bday on top of that. Now what? I love that girl & y’all ain’t gonna make me look like I ain’t rocking with her.”

Elsewhere in the conversation with Vulture, Kaytranada discussed his slated collaborations ahead of Drake’s Honestly, Nevermind album. Ultimately, the opportunity fell through the cracks due to his response.

Although Kaytranada responded positively, with, “Sure, hit me up,” he suspects that Drake felt his response wasn’t enthusiastic enough. “Was I supposed to be like, ‘Oh my God, for real? Drake?’ I’m not like that,” he added.

Kaytranada previously discussed Drake’s request, which occurred at the Coachella afterparty in Los Angeles. “I met Drake in L.A. one time, and that was it, really. At one point, one of his boys was like, ‘Your boy wants some beats. He’s gonna do a house album.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, sure, hit me up,'” he told Montreality.

Adding: “That’s my thing: anybody that wanna work with me, just hit me up. Maybe my reaction rubbed them the wrong way, but I was just saying, ‘Hey, if you’re serious, hit me up, let’s work, for real.'”
