Kanye West’s former employee demands $1.2 million after Los Angeles court win
A former Kanye West employee is demanding $1.2 million from the rapper.
Earlier this year, Tony Saxon won a civil case against Ye, with a jury awarding him $140,000. However, he wants even more money.
According to TMZ, Saxon is seeking well over a million dollars in attorney fees, with his legal team claiming they logged over 740 hours over three years in a case they ended up winning.
While also referencing litigation staff time, his lawyers want the court to apply a 1.75 multiplier to the total fee.
Saxon’s attorneys state that the litigation lasted 35 months and put them out $300,00. They added that it involved five different defence lawyers, extensive discovery, multiple depositions, and a two-week jury trial.
They also allege that Kanye made a $100,000 settlement offer before the trial, then demanded that Saxon pay $200,00 and issue a public apology.
In his initial lawsuit, Saxon claimed that he faced dangerous working conditions and wasn’t fully paid for his work. Ye was ordered to pay $100,000 for past and future medical expenses and $40,000 for past pain and suffering.
In response, Saxon’s lawyer said, “Obviously, it’s not as much as we asked for, but under the labour code, they have to pay attorney fees and costs. It’s going to be a lot more than $140,000 when it’s all said and done. The final judgment should be over $1 million.”
However, Kanye filed a motion to grant a new trial or reverse the decision in March, writing, “This case went to the jury without a single admissible medical bill, without any medical records establishing injury, and without expert testimony grounded in any reliable causation or valuation methodology.”
The motion continued, “Yet the jury nevertheless awarded Plaintiff $100,000 in economic damages – $50,000 for past economic loss and $50,000 for future economic loss. That award cannot stand.”
