The album Kanye West thinks is better than ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’
Many believe My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is one of Kanye West‘s best albums, but the Chicago rapper has often talked down on the 2010 project. Ye took to X (formerly Twitter) this week to reveal the album he thinks is better than his fifth LP.
Dark Twisted Fantasy was released in November 2010, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 with 496,000 units. The project was packed with exciting features, including Nicki Minaj, Kid Cudi, Pusha T and Rick Ross.
In a since-deleted post earlier this week, Kanye wrote, “Ye album is waaaay better than Dark Fantasy.” Kanye released his Ye album in June 2018, which was recorded in just two weeks at his West Lake Ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The project has just seven songs with a runtime of under 24 minutes.
In the past, Kanye has criticised Dark Twisted Fantasy, claiming he only made the album to give fans what they want. As well as Ye, he considers Yeezus and 808s and Heartbreak superior projects.
“So many people rate My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy as one of the best albums,” he told SHOWstudio. “[But] Yeezus and 808s & Heartbreak are so much better and stronger. Dark Fantasy is almost like an apology record. ‘Power’ was the least progressive song that I ever had as a first single.”
He continued, “It was like me going back and spending six dedicated months – it took over two years to release the album – but six dedicated months piecing together what people liked about me, to make an entire bouquet that they loved, that was the most listenable, that was the least challenging.”
Kanye compared My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy to Thanksgiving dinner and claimed his other projects are more influential.
“People want to talk about how much they loved that like it was Thanksgiving dinner,” he said. “And how long has Thanksgiving dinner been cooked for? And it’s great, you don’t want anybody changing things on Thanksgiving dinner. But you take 808s or Yeezus, where these albums got completely panned when they came out, and then you see how they end up influencing things.”
