Joey Bada$$’s favourite hip-hop songs to get high to
Joey Bada$$ has released plenty of songs that, if it’s your thing, suit the mood rather nicely while you’re getting high.
Tracks like ‘My Yout,’ ‘Hazeus View’ and ‘Hotbox’ are littered with references to smoking weed, and it’s clearly a subject that the man is fond of incorporating into his songs. But as a listener, too, he loves tracks with a smokey haze. He even put together a weed-smoking hip-hop playlist for GQ back in 2015.
Joey’s list was notably made up of hip-hop artists from both the East and West Coasts. An east-coast boy himself, he was born and raised in Brooklyn, Joey holds no beef against the west at all, as he explained in the feature. “If there’s anything [the two coasts] share, it’s the smoking culture,” he said. “We’ve got no differences there… Well, Cali’s claiming they’ve got the best and all that, but you know, it’s all love.”
From the west coast, Joey selected tracks from The Game, 2Pac, Ice Cube and Kendrick Lamar, while from the east he mentioned Jay-Z, Nas, The Notorious BIG and himself. No harm in slipping his own work in there, too.
The Game song that Joey selected was ‘Ol’ English,’ which he described as his “go-to track for blazing and being in ‘space jam’ mode,” while his Pac pick was ‘Temptations.’ “Being a young artist,” he said of ‘Temptations,’ “this song really resonates with me, because I can understand everything that 2Pac’s talking about on there. The vibe of it, with the reverbed singing in the background, is very fitting for a playlist like this.”
Joey’s Ice Cube song was ‘Today Was A Good Day,’ which he felt was a fairly obvious choice for a playlist for getting high. The vibes are impeccable. “Do I really have to explain this song?” he asked rhetorically, laughing. “I think everybody knows why I put that one on there! He’s talking about the one day where nothing bad happens—it’s when the sun comes out.”
His Kendrick selection was ‘Poe Man’s Dream,’ which made the list because “the hook has this airy, smoker’s cloud type of vibe. The lyrics are, ‘Smoke good / Eat good / Live good,’ so it’s a perfect fit.”
Joey chose ‘Feelin’ It’ by Jay-Z, because every time he listens to it he is transported to “an island on the beach,” which is where he typically wants to be when he gets high, and he also selected ‘Purple’ by Nas, because the beat is “hazy, purple” and strikes a chord with him because he likes purple haze so much.
‘Machine Gun Funk’ was his Biggie Smalls selection—“a very perfect place to be when you’re space jam-ed,” as he put it—and, to tie things up, he chose his own song ‘Run Up On Ya,’ because “it comes alive extra at nighttime.”
