Joe Budden calls Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion “commercialised ratchet”

‘Pump It Up’ rapper-turned-podcaster Joe Budden has never been one to hold his tongue, and recently, the Jersey emcee gave his scathing opinion concerning Cardi B’s latest song, ‘Bongos.’

As the host of the Joe Budden podcast, the hip-hop commentator has no filter. In the show’s latest episode, Budden laid into Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, labelling them as “commercialised ratchet.” While speaking about ‘Bongos,’ Budden asserted, “This record don’t seem like it has lasting power.”

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion collaborated in 2020 on their infamous song ‘WAP’, which divided men and women alike. However, Budden has made it clear that ‘Bongos’ is not to his liking and elaborated, “It’s that hard-ass beat, the hook is not hooking for me, there’s nothing in it to make it stay.”

Following Cardi B’s rise to rap fame in 2017, hip-hop has seen an influx of “ratchet” female rappers, including the likes of Sukihana and Sexyy Red, who have put themselves in the limelight by releasing songs solely about derogatory sex.

Budden addressed this, declaring, “This commercialised ratchet has passed. It’s ghetto ratchet time. Neither one of them are ghetto ratchet on this song. I think they both have potential to be, and Cardi normally smokes ghetto ratchet, but she’s too big.”

He continued, “And neither one of them are ghetto ratchet on this song. We need a ‘Bodak Yellow’ now. This sounds like two women who can’t make a song.” Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B have both been extremely successful until this point.

However, as Cardi B prepares to release her sophomore album, many, including Joe Budden, are keen to see whether or not she will be able to move away from the ratchet music she has built her entire brand around. You can watch the episode below.
