Jay-Z explains how he "cheated" with his 'God Did' verse

Jay-Z has explained why he “cheated” on his one take verse on DJ Khaled’s ‘God Did’.

It was revealed earlier this week by Jay’s longtime engineer Young Guru that it only took Hov one take to record his almost four-minute verse for DJ Khaled’s new album. However, the Brooklyn rapper has now taken to social media to say why that’s not wholly accurate.

Jay took part in a Twitter Spaces conversation with DJ Khaled, JAY-Z, Lenny S and Rob Markman on August 31st, and told fans what really happened in the booth.

According to his version of events, Hov was waiting in the studio for Khaled to send him the track’s instrumental in full when Guru turned Dr. Frankenstein and created a loop for the track with the song’s original hook, which allowed Jay to warm-up.

“So while we was waiting for you to send the beat, we was just playing the [loop] inside the control room; so I was going through it a couple times,” JAY-Z told Khaled on Twitter. “I was just rapping over like, any part, it kept looping and drops was happening in the wrong place.”

“I think I sent it to you like that, right?” Khaled responded. “Hov rapped over the hook, breaks — ’cause Guru was waiting for me to send the instrumental,” he continued. “When you sent it back, I was like, ‘This man rapping over the hook.’”

Jay added: “So I cheated a couple times before I went in the booth, I was playing it in the control room; so when I went in the booth it was pretty much a done deal.”
