Ice Spice’s ‘Y2K!’ deluxe album debuts with low first week sales

Ice Spice was one of the hottest new rappers when she burst onto the scene and could seemingly do no wrong in terms of commercial success. However, her album sales haven’t quite experienced the same level of success as her singles.

The Bronx rapper released her debut album Y2K! in July 2024, debuting at number 18 on the Billboard 200 chart with 28,000 units in its first week on the chart. On Christmas Day, she released the album’s deluxe version, Y2K! I’m Just a Girl (Deluxe), which only managed 4,800 units and failed to break into the top 200 albums in the US during the latest tracking week.

One person wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “How does your career die this fast?” with another adding, “Didn’t even know she dropped, wonder how Ice Spice fell off so fast.” Another user added, “They dropped it on Christmas. Like I’m gonna take time away from my family to listen to Ice Spice.”

Someone else came to Spice’s defence, writing, “It’s a deluxe with one new song. The other two new songs are irrelevant kinda. And features. She ain’t Kendrick the deluxe isn’t gonna sell that well.”

Since her breakout single ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ in 2022, Spice has enjoyed plenty of success with songs such as ‘Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2’, ‘Princess Diana’ and ‘Barbie World’, peaking at number three, four and seven on the Hot 100, respectively.

Before Y2K!, Spice released an EP titled Like..? in 2023, with that project debuting at number 37 on the Billboard 200. It later climbed to number 15 after dropping her ‘Princess Diana’ remix with Nicki Minaj. The EP has sold over 500,000 units as of October 2023.

The low sales come just one week after Spice received backlash for showing up late to a New Year’s Eve show in Brisbane, Australia. Spice was set to hit the stage at Wildlands Festival at 10:30pm but showed up 25 minutes late, resulting in her performing two songs before getting her mic cut off.

Podcaster and journalist, Brenton Larney, who was in attendance, said, “That was a bit ridiculous and it was just really disrespectful how she walked off,” he told The Guardian. “She was laughing. They tried to give her flowers for her birthday and she just shrugged them off.”

He added that Spice seemed as if “she didn’t want to be there. It was just really disrespectful to see, especially with all the cancellations and stuff we’ve had in the Australian music scene. It didn’t help.”
