Ice Cube hits back at critic saying he should “hang the mic up”

Ice Cube has responded to a social media post that told him to retire. The NWA rapper came across the statement on October 20th.

In a viral post seen by over 2.5 million people, an X user criticised his song ‘Act My Age’ while sharing a clip from the music video.

They wrote in the post, “This is a prime example of why as a rapper you just gotta know when it’s time to hang the mic up.”

A veteran rapper, Cube released classic albums like AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, Death Certificate, The Predator, and Straight Outta Compton with NWA well over three decades ago.

Cube discovered the post and claimed he will never call it quits on music, calling the person out for their lack of humour.

“I would never listen to you and hang up my mic,” he said. “You’ve obviously lost your sense of humor. You need to go find it and stay out my business.”

The song’s lyrics deal with this topic. In the intro for his Scarface collaboration, a woman encourages older rappers to keep releasing music.

“If you over 35 and still rapping/ Keep rapping, my boy,” the woman says. “Keep going to that studio/ Fuck all of that, ‘Oh, I’m getting old’ shit/ No, we need y’all/ We need y’all to save music/ We need the real lyricists back/ We need the ones that, you know what I’m saying/ When music had a message/ You know what I’m saying, it made an impact.”

‘Act My Age’ was released as a single from Cube’s most recent album, Man Up. The music video has over 1.3 million YouTube views and a further 707,000 Spotify streams. It finds both rappers starring as babies in a cot.
