How Scarface almost died in 2024
Scarface has faced some profoundly challenging times in recent years.
In 2024, the Geto Boys rapper was forced into hospital with a serious health issue, and it nearly claimed his life. Sent to the operating table for open heart surgery, the procedure almost went catastrophically wrong. Were it not for the skilful actions of his surgeon, he wouldn’t have pulled through.
Scarface took to Instagram after the operation to explain what had happened, posting a photo of himself with his surgeon and thanking him for saving him. The surgeon, Dr Andrea Quarti, had been tasked with repairing the rapper’s aortic aneurysm and “leaky valve,” but, as he set about his work, “something crazy happened.”
Scarface revealed that, when Dr Quarti had gotten him “cut open,” as he put it in his stark words, the surgeon found that the aneurysm had “torn the entire circumference” of Scarface’s aorta. This, the rapper claimed, meant “certain death.”
Except it did not play out that way. The skill of Dr Quarti was up to the task of dealing with the situation, which he duly did. As Scarface explained in his post, he awoke 24 hours later, which came as “no surprise” to the surgeon, who backed his own abilities.
As he came to understand how close to death he’d come, Scarface was truly grateful to the doctor. But he couldn’t wrap his head around why he’d been so lucky. He asked Dr Quarti, “Why me doc, out of all the people you could’ve worked on?”
The surgeon apparently replied by looking up to the sky and pointing, as if implying that there had been a divine influence upon this whole saga. Scarface, in any case, was grateful for being under the care of Dr Quarti, whom he described as “one of the best if not the best.”
In a previous Instagram post, Scarface had explained that the procedure could have “went either way,” but that he was grateful to still be alive. “To be upright and smiling today,” he wrote, “shows you that God ain’t nothing to play with.”
Scarface’s heart issues have not been the only health-related challenges he’s faced in recent years. He contracted COVID-19 during the early stages of the pandemic in March 2020, which damaged his renal system and meant that he required a kidney transplant the following year. Now in his mid-50s, he has certainly had some tough experiences in recent years.
