Behind the pop-pink façade and bubblegum-rap tracks, Nicki Minaj is known for being quite a difficult and sometimes conniving person. When the Queens native (real name Onika Maraj) burst onto the scene in 2007, she was an upbeat, smiley character. However, as she’s navigated the industry over the years, Minaj has become a little colder and incredibly coarse.
People have undoubtedly scrutinised Minaj over the years, and it’s understandable why the ‘Anaconda’ musician may have felt attacked. However, by her second project, the emcee was including diss tracks on her album.
Although Nicki Minaj is less direct and perhaps a little more tactful, she has been just as distasteful as her New York counterpart, Azealia Banks, and her feud with Cardi B is a prime example of this.
Cardi B’s entrance into the hip-hop mainstream in 2017 began to unfold in 2018, and Nicki’s angst was on full display. Minaj and Cardi B got into a physical altercation at the Harper’s Bazaar ICONS party. Cardi B was allegedly elbowed in the face by a security guard and threw a shoe at Minaj. There were also heated social media exchanges between the two.
However, during this period, rumours surrounding Cardi B’s marriage were swirling around the internet, with many saying that she and her husband, Offset, were preparing to get a divorce after Cardi posted a video saying that she and Offset had separated. Unfortunately, with this in mind, Minaj supposedly tried to destroy Cardi B’s marriage with a music video.
In 2018, Nicki Minaj featured on Tekashi 6ix9ine’s track ‘FEFE’. However, one of the backup dancers accompanying Minaj was a well-known video vixen, Summer Bunni, who had recently found fame as a female who had slept with Offset during his marriage. Hip-hop media outlets at the time were reporting that Offset had requested a threesome with Summer and the female emcee Cuban Doll.
Cardi’s husband even admitted to it in a heartfelt apology video in which he said “I only got one birthday wish, and that’s to get my wife back, Cardi, you know what I’m saying. We’re going through a lot of things right now in the media. I want to apologize to you, Cardi. I embarrassed you. I made you look crazy.”
He continued, “I was partaking in activities I shouldn’t have been taking in. I apologize for breaking your heart, breaking our promise, breaking God’s promise and being a selfish, messed-up husband.” Despite the admission, Cardi B and Offset eventually met in the middle and remain together to this day. However, Minaj was never confirmed as the reason Bunni appeared in the video.
