How many kids does Kendrick Lamar have?

K Dot is undoubtedly a force in hip hop, praised for his clever wordplay, profound raps, and ability to swiftly cut down Drake. But when it comes to his personal life, Kendrick Lamar is much quieter.

Even with his international fame and huge cultural influence, Kendrick has managed to keep his children out of the public eye, only sharing minor details in interviews from time to time.

Kendrick has two children in total, both with his longtime fiancée, Whitney Alford. The couple have been together since they were teenagers, and got engaged in 2015. They have never publicly married and Kendrick rarely talks about his relationship. In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2017, when asked why he keeps his love life so guarded, Kendrick responded “I want something that’s just for me”.

The couple had their first child, Uzi, in July 2019. Neither Kendrick nor Whitney made an announcement about the birth of their daughter, and it wasn’t until years later that the media learned her name.

Only when Kendrick released his fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, in 2022, was Uzi shared with the world. “Uzi, your father’s in deep meditation” raps Kendrick on the track ‘Mr. Morale’.

When the album later won ‘Best Rap Performance’ and ‘Best Rap Album’ at the 2023 Grammy Awards, Kendrick acknowledged the role of his family in the project. During his acceptance speech, he said “First and foremost, I want to thank my family for giving me the courage and the vulnerability to share these stories and share my truth with this album”.

Following suit, Whitney shared a rare glimpse into her and Kendrick’s family life, posting a video of Uzi reacting to her father’s speech. “Daddy!”, she says in the video. Whitney then says: “He’s talking about us. He’s talking about his family… Uzi, Enoch and mommy”. It was this video that introduced the world to the name of their second child, Enoch.

The exact birth date of Enoch isn’t known, but reports suggest it’s around May 2022. The cover of Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers was the first time that Kendrick brought Enoch into the public space. The image shows Kendrick standing, wearing a crown of thorns and holding Uzi. In the background, Whitney sits on a bed cradling Enoch.

As with their daughter, the couple never formally announced the arrival of their son. Still, fans listened carefully to the lyrics of ‘Mr. Morale’ and heard “Enoch, your father’s just detoxed”. In ‘Worldwide Steppers’, Kendrick raps “My son Enoch is the part two”. The small mentions were enough to confirm that Kendrick was now a father of two.

Kendrick expressed that he initially had doubts about releasing Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers because of how personal it was. After thinking about his children, though, he believed the album could be a prerequisite of how to cope in life, and that gave the album its beauty.

While remaining private, Kendrick has been open about how fatherhood has impacted his artistic perspective and personal growth. In an interview with W Magazine in 2022, he said “My children allowed me, in their development as human beings beginning to walk and talk, to remove my ego”.

“To know that my children, too, will have their own independence, that allows me to understand the unconditional love on my end”.
