How Jay-Z and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs first met each other
Jay-Z and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs have a long and complicated relationship that dates back many years. Since their first interaction in the early 1990s, the pair have grown as musicians and built billion-dollar empires. Still, there are many interesting details about their friendship.
Combs and Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter first met in the 1990s. Jay-Z had known Biggie Smalls since they were teenagers, and when the Ready To Die creator signed with Bad Boy in 1993, Hov had the privilege of seeing him in the studio.
During the ’90s, both Combs and Jay were around Biggie Smalls, and as one of Biggie’s best friends, Diddy and Jay always got on well with the former admiring the latter’s ambition. Although he never signed him to Bad Boy, they became friends. In 1997, the pair collaborated on a track that landed on Diddy’s debut studio album, No Way Out.
The following year, Hov provided a verse for Diddy’s sophomore project. Still, around the turn of the millennium, they both experienced controversial legal troubles that they were able to overcome. In 1999, Jay-Z faced charges following a stabbing at a New York nightclub. At the same time, Diddy was facing trial for a shooting inside a nightclub that culminated in the imprisonment of Shyne.
Both men avoided jail time, and their friendship continued to grow. After establishing themselves as businessmen as well as musicians during the 2000s, Jay-Z and Combs began building business portfolios outside of music. Both men made massive investments in TV, beverages, clothing and sports and saw huge returns.
However, it wasn’t just their unfathomable wealth that bonded the two. They were often seen supporting each other publicly and attending events together. It is common knowledge that the two celebrities move in similar circles, and in 2022, they attended DJ Khaled’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony together, where they were seen chatting and showing support for their mutual friend.
In 2015, during an interview with Sway Calloway, Combs revealed he was working on a business deal with Carter to see them enter a joint venture. Although their joint venture never materialised, they have become billionaires due to their profitable business endeavours.
Diddy’s initial interactions and friendship with Jay were all due to his association with Biggie Smalls. With Biggie came much exposure to the Brooklyn underground of the 1990s, the birthplace of the emcee many know today as Jay-Z.
Since the death of Biggie in 1997, Jay-Z has been the most powerful and wealthiest artist to emerge out of New York, so it is only natural that Diddy would want to keep such an influential figure around.
