How Gucci Mane fell asleep during his ‘Spring Breakers’ sex scene

The 2012 crime film Spring Breakers caused a stir following its release, criticised by some for its sexist portrayal of women. Even after its release, the movie’s reputation in that regard wasn’t exactly helped by revelations of what happened when Gucci Mane arrived on set.

Gucci was cast in the film to play a rival to James Franco’s drug-dealing character, and his part required him to shoot a sex scene. But, according to the film’s director, Harmony Korine, the rapper-turned-actor was in no fit state to do it.

Speaking in 2013 to Vulture about Gucci’s involvement in the film, Korine explained how the woman that Gucci was meant to shoot the scene with had been cast specifically with him in mind. “They sent me a clip of this girl walking across the room with three or four Coke cans on her ass, and we cast her, based on that video,” he said, arguably speaking with that same whiff of sexism that the film itself was accused of.

In any case, despite this woman being specifically cast with Gucci in mind, he nonetheless failed to “perform” as intended for the scene. He couldn’t act in it properly because he was too high.

“In his entourage, everybody smokes weed from the beginning of the day to the end,” Korine explained. “So we’re inside this house in St Petersburg, and the fucking weed smoke was so insane and Gucci was basically catatonic. I was like, ‘Gucci, you’ve got to have sex with this chick now!’”

Gucci was apparently in no state to do what was intended, but, through his stoned haze, he offered up a solution. “He wanted her to ride him so he wouldn’t have to do any physical labour,” Korine claimed.

They started shooting that way, and it initially worked. But, “as he is getting fucked,” Korine started “to hear snores.” Gucci had fallen asleep.

“He had literally passed out!” claimed Korine. “And she was riding his dick the whole time. I’d never in my life filmed a sex scene where the dude was sleeping… and she was on top of him for a good 45 minutes.”

Vulture later confirmed Korine’s claim by speaking with Gucci himself. “Yes, I was knocked out,” the rapper admitted, insisting that he had been exhausted that day without mention of being too high.

“I was tired,” he said. “I had a concert down there in St Petersburg, one of the days I had to shoot a scene. Same time, same night. We started shooting at ten o’clock in the evening until one or two o’clock. I was extremely tired because Harmony would work for almost 48 hours straight, I think.”
