Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five’s Kidd Creole guilty of manslaughter

Kidd Creole, who is a founding member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, was found guilty on Wednesday of fatally stabbing a homeless man.

The 62-year-old, whose real name is Nathaniel Glover, is guilty of first-degree manslaughter after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. came to his decision. The incident happened in 2017 after Glover’s heated exchange with 55-year-old John Jolly became heated and turned physical.

Glover used a steak knife to fatally stab Jolly, which he tried to claim was an act of self-defence. However, this didn’t stand up in a court of law. Bragg informed jurors the act happened after he believed Jolly was hitting on him, which led to the attack.

On August 1st, 2017, when Glover was walking to his maintenance job, he was approached by Jolly, who asked him “What’s up?” His lawyer, Scottie Celestin, told the jury: “Ladies and gentlemen, this is New York City. It’s 12 o’clock at night. Who’s saying ‘What’s up?’ to you with good intentions? His fear for his life was reasonable.”

Last year, Glover told Source he wasn’t acting out of homophobia. “Now I’m fighting the image that they portrayed me as a person who’s intolerant of people with alternative lifestyles and that’s not true,” he told the magazine.

Glover added: “[…] They made me seem like I was the villain and the person who actually attacked me was the victim. How do they justify charging me with murder when this guy attacked me?”

He’s set to be sentenced on May 4th.
