Fugees rapper Pras ordered to pay $64m in conspiracy case

Pras has been ordered to pay $64 million to the government. The Fugees rapper was found guilty of illegal foreign lobbying and conspiracy charges in 2023.

On October 30th, Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that Pras “obtained proceeds in the amount of at least $64,923,226 from his offences.”

Pras’ lawyers called the order “grossly disproportionate.” His spokesperson, Erica Dumas, told Billboard, “They already took 100 [million] from him and now they want another 64 [million].”

The rapper is scheduled to be sentenced for conspiracy, witness tampering, and failing to register as an agent of China next month. He could face decades in prison.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Pras had gone for a health check-up and was diagnosed with colon cancer. As a result, he missed a court hearing.

Dumas said at the time, “Pras missed Friday’s sentencing hearing while undergoing emergency surgery for colon cancer removal. We stand with him and his family and wish him a full recovery as he addresses this serious health matter.”

She added that Pras was “recovering right now until he is in the clear and focused on spending time with his family ahead of sentencing. He still remains hopeful for his future.”

Pras is best known as a member of the Fugees alongside Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean. Their 1996 album, The Score, is considered one of the greatest albums of all time.

The project was nominated for ‘Album of the Year’ at the Grammys while winning ‘Best Rap Album’, and included hits like ‘Killing Me Softly’, ‘Ready or Not’, ‘Fu-Gee-La’, and ‘No Woman, No Cry’.

Pras quit the group in 2024. “I’m done with that,” he said. “They’re going to Europe [to tour]. I can’t go, so. It’s what it is.”
