Fat Joe spoke with Biz Markie’s family every week for a year before his death

The late Biz Markie’s wife, Tara, has spoken about Fat Joe’s kindness and revealed that he checked in on her family every week since the rapper fell ill last year.

Last week, the pioneering hip-hop legend passed away after spending over a year in hospital after suffering diabetes-related complications last June. Tara has opened up to TMZ about the support that Joe provided from the moment he heard the news that Markie was unwell.

Tara revealed that Fat Joe would phone her every week without fail and extended the family whatever support they needed. Tara said that Joe even offered to pay the costs of his funeral, but she told him that wouldn’t be necessary.

Biz’s widow confirmed that Joe wasn’t the only iconic rapper who made sure to check on how the family were coping. She said Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane and Treach all acted similarly throughout the terrifying last twelve months.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce, this evening, with his wife Tara by his side, hip hop pioneer Biz Markie peacefully passed away,” the rapper’s representatives said in a statement confirming his death.

“We are grateful for the many calls and prayers of support that we have received during this difficult time,” the statement continued. “Biz created a legacy of artistry that will forever be celebrated by his industry peers and his beloved fans whose lives he was able to touch through music, spanning over 35 years.”

Concluding: “He leaves behind a wife, many family members and close friends who will miss his vibrant personality, constant jokes and frequent banter. We respectfully request privacy for his family as they mourn their loved one.”
