Exploring the Chris Brown and Drake beef

Chris Brown has been on the R’n’B scene since he was a teenager in the mid-2000s and has been in the spotlight ever since. There has been controversy along the way, admittedly, however, for the most part, people have continued to embrace and enjoy his music.

However, he landed himself in one feud that ended up getting quite messy, and that feud was with Drake. Drake has not been in the spotlight for as long as Brown has but has already managed to surpass him in every single way.  Drake is one of the most decorated artists in hip hop. With four Grammy awards, 13 BET awards and a whopping 34 Billboard awards, the Young Money artist has broken all kinds of musical records. In fact, for the 2010s, Drake was awarded the accolade ‘Billboard Artist of the Decade’, beating pop-music powerhouses such as Rihanna, Adele and Brown. However, Drake’s success may not be the reason that the two ended up feuding.

In 2010, around the time that Drake first hit the mainstream, the two were seen as co-existing friends. They were seen at nightclubs together, they performed together, and Drake even confirmed that the two were recording music together. However, behind the scenes, Bajan billionaire singer Rihanna had the two wrapped around her finger in a little love triangle.

It is well-known knowledge that Brown assaulted Rihanna in 2009. However, Rihanna has since declared the two were dating on and off between 2008 and 2013.

So in 2012, there must have been some kind of confusion about who was on and who was off as Brown and Drake found themselves brawling in New York at the famous club W.i.P. According to sources, Drake allegedly punched Brown in the face and struck him with a bottle. Drake was allegedly accompanied by Birdman and Meek Mill while Brown was with his security. No charges were brought forward.

However, as Brown moved on to begin dating model Karrueche Tran, rumours were swirling about Drake and Rihanna, but then in 2013 Drake fired a shot at Brown so loud everyone turned their heads. During an interview with Elliot Wilson on East Village Radio, when asked about Brown, Drake audaciously called him out as he declared, “His insecurities are the reason I make better music than him…I’m more popping than him. At one point the woman he loves fell into my lap, and I did what a real n*gga would do and treated her with respect.”

However, Chris never responded, and by the next year, they seemed to have buried the hatchet when a picture of Chris and Drake in the studio emerged on Drake’s Instagram. That same year, the two did a skit together at the ESPY awards. So the beef was over?

No, because during Drake’s beef with Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill, Brown took a photo with the rapper and in the caption labelled Drake as a fake. But finally in 2018, the feud was once again ended after Chris posted Drake’s album Scorpion. Shortly after, Drake followed Chris on Instagram and swiftly brought Chris out at a show. Now the two have no beef. But again it looks like the beef was as a result of a third party. This time, Bajan billionaire Rihanna.
