How Eazy-E inspired Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s rap name

Bone Thugs-n-Harmony are considered to be among the most influential rap groups of all time, but their success, in the first instance, relied on the guidance of a rapper who’d once been in a legendary group himself.

Eazy-E saw the potential in the aspiring group of young rappers from Cleveland, Ohio. It’s just that Bizzy Bone, Wish Bone, Layzie Bone, Krayzie Bone, and Flesh-n-Bone needed some direction. Eazy, as someone who’d been there and done it for himself, was just the man.

Eazy was going through a period of transition himself while Bone Thugs were beginning to figure things out. NWA had recently imploded, and he was concentrating on expanding his Ruthless Records label. Bone Thugs would prove to be ideal signings.

But it wasn’t straightforward for the group. They had to work hard to capture Eazy’s attention, and they weren’t the only ones. Aspiring rappers from all over America were desperate to present their work to record execs, and talent alone wasn’t always enough. Persistence was required.

The rappers were operating under the name of Band Aid Boys when they first formed, although their individual rap names had already taken on the “bone” motif. They later renamed themselves as B.O.N.E. Enterpri$e, which was an improvement on Band Aid Boys, and they recorded their first album under that moniker.

B.O.N.E. Enterpri$e called around to different record execs during this period, hoping to get picked up, but they became especially keen to pin down Eazy. They cobbled together enough money to buy a one-way bus journey to Los Angeles, where they tried for months to meet him. Ironically, they eventually caught wind of his location: he was headed to their hometown of Cleveland for a gig.

The group returned home, where someone, finally, introduced them to Eazy for the first time. This led to an audition, where they showed the former NWA man what they could do. He liked their style, and he brought them back to LA to work out a deal. But there was a problem: he wasn’t happy with the name.

In the spirit of B.O.N.E. Enterpri$e’s knack for singing in harmony, Eazy wanted to call them Thugs-n-Harmony, after a song they had at the time. But the group members were keen to hold onto this “bone” thing they had going on.

“So,” as Layzie Bone recalled on The Bootleg Kev Podcast in January 2026, “it was like, put that shit together. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and here we go.” Eazy signed them to Ruthless, and they became one of the most important rap groups ever.
