Drake declares UK rappers better than American rappers

Drake believes UK rappers are superior to American rappers in terms of lyricism. Over the weekend, Drizzy headlined London’s Wireless Festival across three nights and addressed the current trending topic.

Skepta recently called out American rappers to clash in a rap battle. When Joyner Lucas accepted the invitation, the London MC hit him with a diss track called ‘Friendly Fire’.

On July 12th, Drake brought Skepta on stage and claimed that no rappers worldwide can rap better than those from London, calling them his inspiration.

“The best lyricists in the world, mark my words, I don’t care what nobody says,” he said. “Nobody can out-rap London. Nobody. No disrespect to America. No disrespect to my country. But nobody can out-rap London rappers. This is the best, this is the highest level. This is what I aspire to be.”

Over the three-day headlining sets, Drake brought out many other UK rappers, including Dave, Central Cee, J Hus, Headie One and K-Trap. He also brought out 21 Savage, who was born in the UK.

His love of British culture is no secret, having executive-produced the Top Boy reboot on Netflix. He’s collaborated with Dave on ‘Wanna Know’, teamed up with Giggs on ‘KMT’ and ‘Long Talk’, and dropped a ‘Behind Barz’ freestyle with Link Up TV.

Drake also has a BBK tattoo, paying homage to the Boy Better Know collective. During an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, Skepta spoke about Drizzy discovering him.

“I can’t tell how he heard of me,” he said in 2016. “I will never know, but I’ll put my money on him finding me online and searching for my music because that’s what he’s like – he’s a music lover.

“For me, it was a blessing that he was co-signing me and bigging me up, because I’m still gonna do what I’m gonna do anyway. I’m just blessed to have them man supporting. My album came out on the 6th when I was in Toronto and it’s like home. The way they’ve got me out there is mad.”
