How a Dr Dre punch led to a year-long prison sentence

It was supposed to be an occasion to celebrate hip-hop culture, but 2004’s Vibe Awards ceremony descended into total chaos. When all was said and done, Dr Dre had been punched in the face, the man responsible had been stabbed, and the man responsible for the stabbing had fled the scene.

Dre was at the ceremony to pick up a lifetime achievement award, which was set to be bestowed upon him by Quincy Jones and Snoop Dogg. But, before that took place, a man walked over to Dre’s table, punched him in the face, and set off again. Dre’s bodyguards chased him down.

The punch sparked chaos. A wider brawl broke out, with reports claiming that chairs were thrown and more people were punched. The fighting was so bad that the police were called to restore order again.

Witness reports at the time painted a picture of the disorder. “I saw Dr Dre fighting somebody,” one person told KCAL-TV. “I don’t know if he was fighting back. But there was a guy taken out basically bloodied.”

Amid the chaos, the man who’d thrown the first punch at Dre ended up getting stabbed. This person, later named as Jimmy James Johnson, survived and was taken to hospital. The man who’d stabbed him reportedly fled the scene.

This person, it later emerged, was the rapper Young Buck, who was a part of 50 Cent’s G-Unit group at the time. Police later sought him out, after video evidence emerged of his involvement.

Order was ultimately restored on the night, and the ceremony continued. Dre received his award, but, in the coming months, there were consequences for the violence that had occurred.

Johnson, the man who’d punched Dre, was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment, after he had pleaded guilty. He also received three years probation and was compelled to keep his distance from Dre for three years.

Young Buck, meanwhile, was charged with “assault likely to produce great bodily harm.” He entered a plea of no contest and received three years’ probation and 80 hours of community service.
