Doja Cat is one of the most popular contemporary mainstream artists. The ‘Say So’ vocalist and rapper first burst onto the scene in 2018 with her debut album, Amala, but didn’t become the icon she is today until the release of her 2019 sophomore project Hot Pink, which spawned several hit singles.
Boasting tracks such as ‘Juicy’ featuring Tyga and ‘Candy’ Doja (real name Amala Dlamini), this 2019 body of work saw the vocalist enter the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. The album has since been classified as double-platinum.
Since 2019, Doja Cat has become more relevant and has released two albums. Planet Her in 2021 and Scarlet in 2023. Although Dlamini has released pop and disco tracks, her last project was a hip-hop and R’n’B-centred album with its lead single, ‘Paint the Town Red,’ earning the vocalist her first number-one.
In the leadup to the release of Hot Pink and her commercial breakout, Doja Cat sat down for an interview with Honey German on New York’s Power 105.1 radio. During the discussion, Dlamini discussed using social media to try and build her fan base and described the type of people she wanted to impact with her songs.
However, during the conversation, German asked Doja Cat about her inspirations and even asked her to name her favourite female rap artists of all time. Questioning Dlamini, German stated, “Right now, lists are a big thing I want you to tell me your top five female rappers.”
Responding to German, Dlamini revealed, “Okay, easy. Missy Elliott, Tierra Whack, Rico Nasty, Lauryn Hill and Nicki Minaj.” Doja even revealed that since the age of 15 she had been the biggest Nicki Minaj fan, working her unique style into her own.
