DJ Premier criticises D’Angelo funeral guests for violating privacy

D’Angelo‘s funeral took place at Saint Paul’s Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia, on November 1st, but DJ Premier has called out some of the attendees.

The funeral included performances from Stevie Wonder and D’Angelo’s former bands, The Soultronics, consisting of Questlove, James Poyser, and Pino Palladino, and The Vanguard.

Following the service, Premier took to social media to reveal that attendees were told not to take any photos or videos or post anything online.

“You got to fill out an application to get in and get approved,” he said. “And before you submitted it as a thing at the bottom that said, ‘Please don’t post, please don’t film. And let’s keep it private for the viewing and the service.’”

However, various content ended up surfacing on the internet, which went against the wishes of D’Angelo’s family.

“People are running amok all over there, and they’re posting shit, posting the programme with the whole service, and even the cemetery,” he said. “That shows that fake love is even at your funeral, man, but it is what it is.”

Paying tribute, he concluded, “Michael Eugene Archer, we love you, my dude, D’Angelo. Forever, man. And to Infinity, you already know the love is real over here.”

Bishop Ralland V Robinson conducted the service, with Pastor Jamal Bryant sharing a video tribute. It was attended by the likes of Lauryn Hill, John Mayer, H.E.R., and others.

“We wish to express our profound gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of support,” his family wrote in the programme. “Through music, love and light, Michael D’Angelo Archer’s spirit will shine forever.”

D’Angelo died on October 14th at the age of 51. The iconic soul singer’s cause of death was pancreatic cancer.
