
DJ Polo, hip-hop partner to Kool G Rap, has died
DJ Polo, best known for his work with Kool G Rap, has passed away unexpectedly. His death was revealed by a series of tributes that flooded in on the morning of July 27th.
DJ Chuck Chillout was one of the first to share a dedicated post on social media, writing a simple tribute on his Instagram and Facebook that read: “This Hurt real Bad RIP To DJ POLO.”
Eric B also shared an Instagram post honouring his late friend, referring to the artist as his “brother” and reflecting on the memories they shared. “We had some great times you will never be forgotten GODS speed,” he wrote.
Several high-profile members of the hip-hop and rap world commented under Eric B’s post, including E-40, DJ Green Lantern, DJ Scratch, DITC’s Buckwild, DJ Spinderella and Pete Rock, each remembering the life and legacy of DJ Polo.
Kelvin Mercer, also known as Posdnuos, wrote “Rest in Power,” while Lord Finesse prayer hand emojis and D-Nice commented dove emojis.
Juice Crew member Big Daddy Kane also share a tribute, writing: “Gone but not forgotten Cuz!!! JUICE CREW FOR LIFE!”
DJ Polo first emerged alongside Kool G Rap in the mid-1980s. The pair released four albums together before DJ Polo continued as a solo artist, releasing his debut, Polo’s Playhouse, in 1998.
The late hip-hop star was also recognised as an integral part of the Juice Crew, the collective that helped introduce the likes of MC Shan, Kane, Biz Markie, Rap, and more.
Following his friend’s passing, Rap posted an image of the pair together with the caption: “R.I.P. to a dear friend and a Brother from another Household. He is a legend to Hip Hop and Juice Crew History. DJ Polo! May Light from the Highest be upon him.”
At this stage, his cause of death has not yet been revealed.
