Diddy forced to return his Key To The City by mayor of NYC
The new-disgraced Bad Boy Entertainment founder Diddy has had his Key To The City of New York revoked by the city’s Mayor Eric Adams. The decision was made following the 2016 CCTV footage that surfaced of Diddy (real name Sean Combs) beating and physically abusing his then-girlfriend Cassie.
Hip-hop media outlet TMZ obtained the contents of two letters sent to Diddy’s Combs Entertainment offices in LA and New York. They were sent by Mayor Adams, who revealed that he was “deeply disturbed” by the 2016 CCTV footage.
In the letter, the New York City mayor states that he will always be on the side of domestic abuse survivors and highlights that the Key To The City can only be held by those who are outstanding citizens and law-abiding individuals who set a good example.
As such, Adams insisted that Combs is no longer fit to own the Key To The City. The letter gave Diddy an address to which he had to return the key. This is the first time a Key to New York has been rescinded. Diddy reportedly received the letter on June 4th and returned the honour on June 10th.
Rumours surrounding whether or not Diddy was still a suitable owner of the Key To New York emerged when Mayor Adams spoke with PIX11 and was asked what he thought about the 2016 CCTV footage of Diddy beating Cassie.
The key was awarded to Diddy during a Times Square ceremony in September last year, and when asked by PIX11 whether or not Combs would have to give it back, Eric Adams unveiled he and his team were considering it.
In response to the sensitive question, the Mayor responded, “I think all of us were deeply disturbed by watching that chilling video of the young lady being assaulted by him,” he said. “The committee and the team, we’ve never rescinded a key before, but we are now sitting down to see what the next steps forward are going to be.”
The Key To The City has now officially been taken back by the Mayor.
