De La Soul explain reason behind Tupac Shakur beef
De La Soul had a feud with Tupac Shakur in the 1990s. Now, group member Posdnuos has revealed the origins of their beef.
Pos claims that their issues started when Tupac believed their ‘Ego Trippin’ video mocked his visual for ‘I Get Around’.
“2Pac, we had an issue with because when we did the ‘Ego Trippin’’ video, he unfortunately thought we were mimicking and trying to make fun of the ‘I Get Around’ video,” he told Ambrosia for Heads.
He continued, “He was very disappointed… He reached out to his manager and the people at Tommy Boy at the time and was like, ‘Yo, man, I love those dudes. I didn’t know they had an issue.’”
Pos attempted to call him, but he was caught up in a police incident in Atlanta. From there, their paths never crossed.
De La Soul released their fourth studio album, Stakes Is High, in July 1996. The project called out trends in the hip-hop industry.
Tupac took offence to their comments, prompting him to respond with lyrics in November of that year.
On ‘Against All Odds’ from The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, he rapped, “Look at De La Soul tryna player-hate on my shit, n*gga, eat a fat dick!”
Pac dissed them even further on an unreleased track titled ‘Watch Ya Mouth’. On the song, he references De La Soul’s catalogue.
He raps, “What’s that? De La got a problem with this hard shit?/ Ever since ‘Me Myself and I’, y’all been garbage (you know I’m tellin’ the truth)/ I’ma keep it real, show you how it feels to ride/ Y’all went three feet and stopped rising.”
