The controversial MCs Roddy Ricch called the best of his generation
Roddy Ricch is not an emcee often considered when people are naming the best rappers of all time, but he is undoubtedly an extremely popular lyricist and with songs such as ‘The Box’ and ‘Die Young’ he is definitely capable of making hits.
In 2020, the musician exploded into the mainstream and, ever since, has thought very highly of himself in spite of the waning relevancy that sometimes accompanies a rapid inorganic rise to fame. However, he still considers himself as one of the best rappers and in an interview on the LA Leakers with Justin Credible, Ricch unveiled who he believes to be some of the best rappers of his generation.
When asked about the top new-school MCs under 25, after a brief pause, Ricch named three artists, listing, “I’d say, me and YoungBoy [Never Broke Again] and Kodak [Black],” However, some other fresh rhymers were not appreciative of his picks.
More specifically Memphis native NLE Choppa disagreed with Roddy Ricch and took to social media to add his name into the mix, writing, “Best under 25.. it’s crazy to not mention me when you realize I’m only 19.”
Continuing his X (formerly Twitter) rant, Choppa added, “You don’t have to like my music but my numbers are undeniable. 16 Gold And Platinum Plaques, 6 Songs Over 100M, 6 Billion Streams Worldwide, Sold Out Tour In US, Also Currently Selling out EUROPE TOO [Goat emoji] .”
The rant had not finished, in a rage of self-importance NLE Choppa concluded, “You can’t compare me to no n***a! I’m literally the youngest doing it, and it ain’t one person at my age done what I’ve done so far. Everybody else got at least 3 years on me average. Then it’s me 3 years in the game, and I’ve already did more than some n****s whole career.”
Roddy Ricch hasn’t been too present in hip-hop since the release of his last project, 2021’s Live Life Fast. However, earlier this year, he teased his new project, The Navy Album, with fans. Although his core fanbase is excited, it hasn’t turned many heads in hip-hop. His sophomore project didn’t do anywhere near as well as his debut, and he hasn’t managed to release music of the same quality as his breakout singles.
In an interview with DJ Akademiks earlier this year, he addressed rumours that he had fallen off, stating, “Just because the numbers didn’t align up, or the timing or the plan didn’t really fall the way it was supposed to fall, now n**gas got this different narrative of how they wanna play it, but I know what’s going on.”
However, it does make one wonder considering (in his own words) he is one of the best rappers under 25, why he is not garnering as much attention as the other MCs he mentioned.
