The Christopher Nolan movie Kanye West compared his life to: “I kill myself every night”
Kanye West has been in the news a lot and for all the wrong reasons. Most recently, it has been for his anti-Semitic rants and actions. Whether it’s swastika-emblazoned Yeezy t-shirts or tweets such as “I love Hitler” and “I’m a Nazi”, he has been the focus of media scrutiny for many years now.
Furthermore, following his divorce from Kim Kardashian, his new wife, Bianca Censori, has caught a lot of heat from news outlets, with many alleging that she’s promiscuous and just a pretty face. Still, many remember Kanye West for the years of quality music he gave us prior to his years-long identity crisis.
The Graduation creator Kanye West was and still is a beloved figure in hip-hop and has been a mainstay in the culture since the early 2000s. The producer and self-proclaimed “genius” has been the centre of much controversy over the years and still is.
However, he has always been confident and has never avoided comparing himself to great people. Concerning his brand Yeezy, West regularly compared himself to Steve Jobs and Walt Disney while designing sneakers and creating his company. Furthermore, he was more than happy to lecture radio hosts about Fortune 500 companies.
However, in 2007, while speaking to the renowned magazine GQ, West compared himself to a rather unusual Brit and insisted his life was akin to a thriller movie. That year, West was performing at a memorial concert in London commemorating 15 years since Princess Diana’s death.
That year, Kanye also gave Princes William and Harry a signed copy of the book Raising Kanye, written by his late mum, Donda West. During his visit to the UK, GQ profiled him and described West making minor edits to his hit ‘Diamonds From Sierra Leone’ at a Chiswick recording studio.
Following this, he spoke to the journalist Johnny Davis about his life and how he sees a lot of parallels between him and Princess Diana. Expressing his train of thought, West elaborated, “People say there’s a lot of parallels with us. Like her sticking to what she believed in.”
In 2002, Kanye West was also involved in a car crash, the cause of Princess Diana’s 1997 death. Kanye West had a near-fatal car accident that left him with a fractured jaw that required him to receive an emergency operation and have his jaw wired shut. This famously led to his track ‘Through The Wire’.
However, the crash happened after he fell asleep at the wheel on his way to the studio. West saw his decision to drive after a long flight as putting his life on the line of music. Comparing this to a film, Ye told Davis, “Being willing to die for what you believe in is the mark of a true artist.”
He continued, “It’s like that movie The Prestige where he’s willing to kill himself to deliver that form of entertainment. I kill myself every night to pull this shit off.” Kanye even performed the track at Concert For Diana as a gesture of respect and love for the movie.
