Chris Brown and Lil Durk sued for plagiarism
Chris Brown and Lil Durk have a barrage of huge hits attached to both of them. Brown is, in fact, one of the best-selling artists of the current era. However, that doesn’t mean that both of them are exempt from legal action, as has been proven recently as the duo find themselves on the receiving end of a plagiarism lawsuit.
Micah Foster, a producer, is currently suing Lil Durk and Chris Brown, claiming that the two of them stole his beat without permission. He states that their song, ‘Til the Wheels Fall Off’, ripped off one of his songs, and he intends to prove it in a court of law.
Foster claims that he released a song called ‘Wheels Fall Off’ in 2019. The songs have similar titles and sound alike. The producer alleges that he had played the song forBrown before, as the two have worked together previously.
Generally speaking, when a producer helps create a track that two artists release, they either receive a fixed rate or some royalties (or both). Foster states that Brown and Dirk have both stifled him, as their song, which he claims is a carbon copy of his, has been released without him receiving anything or giving his permission to use the song.
If Foster is successful, it’s safe to assume that he will receive a relatively large chunk of money, as ‘Til The Wheels Fall Off’ currently has over 20 million streams on Spotify. He will be hoping the case wraps up relatively quickly so he can access the money that is supposedly owed to him.
Brown and Durk are yet to respond to the allegation.
This isn’t the first time Chris Brown has been criticised for stealing from other people’s songs. In 2017, a dancehall singer, Red Rat, sued him, claiming that he had stolen one of his “core musical features” on his track ‘Tight Up Skirt’.
Brown and Drake were also sued in 2018 by Brandon Cooper and Timothy Valentine for their song ‘I Love Your Dress’. Cooper and Valentine said that the duo had stolen passages from their track ‘I Love Your Dress’. They also stated that Brown and Drake stole from their chorus as they each repeated the phrase “You got it.” Fortunately for the duo, Cooper and Valentine decided to drop the lawsuit five months into proceedings.
Whether or not the same will happen with the current lawsuit remains to be seen, as this is a developing story.
