Childish Gambino reveals 'This Is America' started as Drake diss

In a new interview, Donald Glover, better known as Childish Gambino, has revealed that his 2018 number-one hit, ‘This Is America’, starring Young Thug and 21 Savage, actually began life as a Drake Diss.

In a new interview with GQ, Glover made the revelation. He said: “The idea for the song started as a joke, to be completely honest. ‘This is America’ – that was all we had, was, like, that line. And it started as a Drake diss, to be honest [laughs], as like, a funny way of, like, doing it,” he said.

“But then I was like, ‘This sh*t sounds kind of hard, though, you know?’ So I was like, ‘Let me play with it.’ So we just had that for a long time.”

This isn’t the first time Gambino has referenced Drake in his work. An animated version of the Canadian rapper appeared in the music video for Feels Like Summer, and he also based an episode of his hit TV series, Atlanta, on Drake, titling it ‘Champagne Papi’. Whilst Drake didn’t physically appear in the episode, he later commented that it was a surreal moment.

He said afterwards: “This shit is surreal, I’m too high for this.”
