Cardi B beats copyright lawsuit over ‘Enough (Miami)’

A judge has dismissed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Cardi B.

Production duo Kemika1956 (real names Joshua Fraustro and Miguel Aguilar) sued the Bronx rapper in 2024, claiming she stole beats from their 2021 song ‘Greasy Frybread’ from the FX series Reservation Dogs.

They accused Cardi of “reproducing, distributing, and publicly performing the infringing work” without permission, allegedly violating the copyright. They also sued her for defamation in an amended complaint.

However, according to Rolling Stone, US District Judge Fernando Rodriguez dismissed the lawsuit in a Texas court on March 30th. Rodriguez found that their claims were too weak to proceed.

Cardi’s lawyers claimed that the plaintiffs shifted to Texas law because they “belatedly realised – after [Cardi’s] counsel brought it to their attention – that they lacked a copyright registration.”

The plaintiffs alleged that Cardi (real name Belcalis Almánzar) performing in Texas made their claims applicable, but the judge wrote, “Plaintiffs do not demonstrate that Almánzar targeted Texas for concert performances, rather than simply including Texas venues within a broader concert tour in numerous states.”

She continued, “Almánzar’s performances in Texas are not distinct from her performances in [various] other states, rendering the concerts in Texas insufficient to establish general jurisdiction.”

In response to the dismissal, Cardi’s attorney, Lisa Moore, said, “Obviously, we are very pleased with today’s order and appreciate the court’s careful consideration of the issues.”

‘Enough (Miami)’ was released in March 2024 and appeared on Cardi’s second studio album, Am I the Drama?, in 2025.

Produced by DJ SwanQo, OG Parker, and Romano, the song reached number nine on the Billboard 200 chart and was nominated for ‘Best Rap Performance’ at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
