Cam’ron claims Jay-Z dissed him on ‘Otis’ with Kanye West
Cam’ron has claimed that Jay-Z dissed him on his hit single ‘Otis’.
Hov’s collaboration with Kanye West was released in July 2011 and appeared on their joint album, Watch the Throne.
During a recent episode of his Talk with Flee podcast, Cam was asked if he had ever heard any Jay lyrics that he thought were subliminal shots at him.
The Dipset rapper then pointed towards several lines on ‘Otis’ that he believes are about him.
In the song, Hov raps, “Uh, live from the Mercer/ Run up on Yeezy the wrong way, I might murk ya/ Flee in the G450, I might surface/ Political refugee, asylum can be purchased.”
The reason for his claims stems from Cam once saying something negative about Kanye and the fact that he had distribution through Asylum Records at the time. Cam alleges his comments were made just a couple of months before ‘Otis’ was released.
‘Otis’, which famously samples Otis Redding’s version of ‘Try a Little Tenderness’, reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was nominated for ‘Best Rap Song’ at the Grammys and won ‘Best Rap Performance’.
Jay-Z and Cam’ron have had their issues over the years, mostly stemming from beats. It all started with Kanye originally giving Cam the beat for ‘Izzo (H.O.V.A.)’, which he was bitter about not using.
Cam later signed to Hov’s Roc-A-Fella label and released ‘Oh Boy’ in 2002. Producer Just Blaze originally played the beat for Jay, who told his engineer, Young Guru, to hold it for him, but Cam jumped on it during a Blaze session and quickly sent it to radio stations.
Hov wanted to feature on a remix of the song after it came out, but Cam decided to delete his verse because Jay allegedly did the same thing with a verse for Peedi Crakk.
