The one song Birdman called his favourite of all time: “Y’all should be playing that all day”
Birdman is one of the biggest executives in hip-hop as the face of the iconic Cash Money Records. The prominent New Orleans figure has found huge success as a businessman, as well as a solo artist and half of Big Tymers alongside Mannie Fresh.
The 55-year-old, widely known as Baby, opened up about his favourite song during a conversation with Angie Martinez in 2016. Birdman loves 50 Cent’s ‘I’m the Man’ so much that he paused the interview in order to tell the radio host that he can’t stop playing it.
“Can I tell you my favourite song right now? 50 Cent – ‘I’m the Man,'” he said on The Angie Martinez Show. “Y’all should be playing that all day, every day. That’s my shit. I’ma play that before I come here, I’ma play that when I leave, I’m play that on the plane, I’ma play that when I get home.”
Birdman also admitted that he found the song a little later than most. “I’m late, man. I’m late on that song ’cause I only just started playing it,” he said. “He’s spitting on that bitch, and the song’s tight. That’s my favourite. Shout out to 50 Cent, man. Keep doing your thing.”
50 Cent released ‘I’m the Man’ in 2015 as a single off his mixtape The Kanan Tape. A remix of the Sonny Digital-produced song was then released in 2016 with Chris Brown, which received an official music video. He raps on the song, “I came in the world cryin’ and fussin’/ N-gga, we ain’t have nothin’/ Every ghetto I know the same/ We trying to make a little change/ Preacher man come around talkin’/ I don’t wanna hear it, keep walkin’/ I’ma put the powder in the pot/ Whip it ’till I’m pullin’ off a lot.”
Birdman revealed that while he hadn’t told 50 Cent that it’s his favourite song, they’re “cool” with each other. Shortly after declaring ‘I’m the Man’ as his favourite song, the Cash Money founder revealed he wanted to executive produce a sequel to 50’s classic 2003 debut, Get Rich or Die Tryin’. “Told @50cent I wanna executive produce his next album.it’s guaranteed platinum plus #getrixhordietryin .P2 let’s getit,” he wrote on Instagram.
50 Cent hasn’t released a project since The Kanan Tape dropped in December 2015. His last studio album, Animal Ambition, was released in 2014 with features from Yo Gotti, Trey Songz, Jadakiss, Prodigy, ScHoolboy Q, Styles P and others.
Despite beefing with Lil Wayne in the past, 50 Cent has also had kind words to say about Birdman, giving him credit for remaining relevant amid artists coming and going in the industry. He said in a social media post in 2020, “Shout out to @birdman in a culture that’s out with the old and in with the new we stick around, that’s how you know you have a gift.”
