Big Sean confirmed to feature on Will Smith’s new single
Hip-hop fans have been thinking about Will Smith’s upcoming project for a while. Earlier this year, he posted a cryptic message on his Instagram account about the 1999 movie The Matrix. As such, fans were curious as to whether or not Smith may be involved in the upcoming sequel to the film. However, that may not be the case, as the actor recently took to social media to announce that he will release a single alongside Big Sean.
Smith also uploaded a trailer that takes heavy inspiration from the 1999 film. The trailer for ‘Beautiful Scars’ sees Smith and Sean recreate one of the film’s most iconic scenes known as the “red or blue pill” scene.
In the trailer, Big Sean portrays Morpheus, while Smith portrays the main character, Neo. In the short clip, the two musicians reflect on Smith’s career choices, with Big Sean telling Smith, “Look, you’ve made some awesome career choices your whole life. There’s only one you truly regret. Well, maybe two, but we’re not gonna focus on that one.”
The Detroit emcee continues, “So, I’m gonna give you a choice. Blue pill, everything remains the same, and you get to move on with your life. Red pill, you get to go back and star in that movie that got away. The choice is yours.” However, unlike in the movie, Smith chooses both pills, which prompts Big Sean to say, “Shit, that wasn’t even an option.”
This track has been a long time coming as, on January 7th, Smith let fans know that he rejected an offer to star in The Matrix in favour of Wild Wild West. Keanu Reeves would go on to star as Neo and turned The Matrix into a phenomenon.
Still, before revealing that the Matrix-inspired teasers were for a music project, fans believed that Smith was rebooting the beloved film franchise. Still, many think he may be working on the sequel’s soundtrack.
Smith has returned to focusing on his music in recent times, making his comeback last year with the single ‘Work Of Art’ featuring his son and Russ. He quickly followed up with the track ‘Tantrum’ featuring Joyner Lucas. Both songs are expected to be part of an upcoming album, Dance In Your Darkest Days. The album has yet to receive a release date and will be his first since his 2005 project, Lost And Found.
Although Will Smith is primarily renowned for being an actor, many people in hip-hop also know him to be a competent rapper. Although several of his records within the genre were commercial and extremely radio-friendly, he still put out his fair share of music, which is why so many are excited to hear what he has to offer in 2025.
