BET Awards 2024: Kendrick Lamar sweeps up at ceremony
Compton superstar Kendrick Lamar had an amazing night at this year’s BET Awards on October 15th as he took home eight awards, including ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Artist of the Year’. Much to the anger of Drake, his diss Drizzy track ‘Not Like Us’ was nominated for eleven awards while not one of Drake’s disses was considered for a gong.
The 2024 BET Hip-Hop Awards were hosted by the iconic Terror Squad founder Fat Joe, making this his third consecutive time on this duty. The show took place in the Nevada city of Las Vegas. Female MCs had notable success this year, with Nicki Minaj landing ‘Album of the Year’ with her popular Pink Friday 2. Astoundingly, Sexyy Red was awarded the honour of ‘Best Breakthrough Artist’, while BET awarded Missy Elliott for being the ‘Best Live Performer’.
The highest honour of the night went to Houston native Travis Scott, who was the recipient of the ‘I Am Hip-Hop’ award, which recognised his work as a producer, artist and hitmaker for over a decade. During his speech, the ten-time Grammy Award nominee declared, “I’ve always had this idea and vision still to this day to take the sound and take things to the next level.”
He continued, “I’m just so glad that we made it this far. I want to let everybody know where you come from doesn’t really matter, what goes on in your brain can take you to the next level and beyond.”
The title of ‘Hustler of the Year’ went to the businessman, actor and rapper 50 Cent who recently announced a residency in Las Vegas There were also live performances from Miami MCs Trina and Yung Miami as well as Memphis legend Juicy J, and 2 Chainz. Despite the performances and big-name winners, some fans took to social media to criticise the awards. Unsurprisingly, many weren’t happy that the lyrically poor, gimmick emcee Sexyy Red was chosen as the ‘Best Breakthrough Rapper when other, potentially more deserving nominees were snubbed.
That said, for the most part, fans and critics alike agreed with the results of this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards and there wasn’t any controversy surrounding the ceremony. The Alchemist also had a good night taking home awards for his DJing and beatmaking skills. Shannon Sharpe was also rewarded for his Katt Williams interview, taing home the BET honour of best hip-hop platform.
