Beastie Boys’ Mike D announces debut solo album
Beastie Boys rapper Mike D has announced his first solo album.
The iconic hip-hop group released their final album, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, in 2011, but now one of its members is back with new music.
The 60-year-old (real name Michael Diamond) has revealed that his debut solo album is titled Thank You.
The project is made up of 13 tracks and is scheduled for release on August 28th via Capitol Records.
To go with the announcement, Mike shared the self-produced first single, ‘True Colors’, on June 8th.
“It’s been so much fun making this music with people I love and I have grown to really appreciate in our collaboration,” he said. “And I just hope it’s fun for others and not overly serious, because let’s be real, I’m releasing this music into a very strange and dark and power-fixated world that really devalues art and feelings and compassion and empathy and equality.”
Speaking on the sound of the album, he previously told NME, “The way I describe the record is that musically it’s still pretty immature, and lyrically it’s a little bit more mature. I just feel like there’s more of the things I had to tap into. I had to learn how to feel all over again.”
In making the project, he stated that there was “a lot of commonality in terms of how I worked with Beastie Boys.”
Mike recorded the album at his home studio. Collaborators include Carter Lang, Jared Solomon, Ging, Jason Lader, Eddie Ruscha, and Tyran Donaldson, with TDE’s Derek ‘MixedByAli’ Ali mixing and Nicolas de Porcel mastering.
